Much of the remaining breeding material of the black bee in the Netherlands comes from the isle of Texel, where the dark bee is still present in a fairly pure form. The young queens are mated on Texel itself or at the Neeltje Jans mating station by the De Duurzame Bij foundation.
My hives are currently populated with the landrace of the Wageningse Eng, a mixture of everything that flies around above the Wageningse Eng. Mongrels, so to speak.
